30 Days to Something Day 2!

Day 2!

Languages

It still feels deceptively easy. The same leech gave me problems again today. So I think I’m going to work on actually saying it to people, even if they don’t understand a word I’m saying. It helps me and it funny to see people a bit confused sometimes. Plus I’ll get to insert a little humble brag of how I’m practicing a new language. Something I really wouldn’t recommend doing to often because you will get in the habit of wanting validation for learning, without actually learning.

Today I’m going to start watching Diriliş Ertuğrul, I’m not sure I’f I’ll like it or now. If I don’t it’s not a big deal because I can just continue Magnificent Century.

Fitness

I wasn’t able to get outside today to practice my front lever, but I did practice my L-sit and core strength, which is most of where I fail for the front lever. I can get to the position but I can’t hold it for very long because my abs are my weak link. Since I stress simplicity and effectiveness I kept it to 2 very effective exercise for core strength. Hollow body holds, and superman holds. The L-sit is also very effective for core so I trained that first so that I wouldn’t be impeded by already being fatigued.

I did 4x45sec holds for L-sit, and 3x45sec each for hollowbody and superman holds. There was a 30 second rest for each and the emphases was on form and max tension throughout.

The hollowbodies really brought me to my knees. Despite having nice looking abs and having been able to do dragon flags only months ago, I really struggled to keep my legs up. On the other side, I found superman hold very easy despite never training back alone. During the last two sets I would also kick my legs and move my arms in a swimming fashion to add more of a challenge.

I didn’t feel my chest had been trained in the last two days so I also did 3 sets of 6 reps of dips on the v of my counter tops with a 10 second flexed hold at the top. Flexed because if your arms are straight it focuses more stress on the joints, but if they are even slightly out of alignment or flexed then the muscles have to work for you not to collapse. That really ended the workout well as I took the last rep on everything to near failure and maintained tension in all areas in very exercise.

Hopefully I will see improvements in ab strength as the weeks go by. I also noticed that I still have limited flexion when stretching the hamstring which is holding back my L-sit. I’ll be using Dan Jeong’s Hamstring stretch video to help remedy this. He also sent me a video on FB to help with the problem of calf pain when stretching the hamstring.

Business

I didn’t work on my LinkedIn a all today despite having a plan. That’s something for me to work on first thing in the morning. But, right now I’m working on making my first Craigslist post, and my emails to service providers that I want to work with.

I fell that I’m on the path to success and I’m also really  getting the hang of the knowledge for the larger startup.

And even though I’m working at a minimum wage job at the moment because I don’t have the client pipeline to sustain myself, I’m constantly learning and taking in new experiences trying to gain something new from every situation. I honestly didn’t want to take the job but then I read Financial Samurai’s Spoiled or Clueless article which changed my mind. And I saw that there were upsides to it as well. I’ll also have startup money to do the coffee meetup and for transportation for networking and meeting clients. Plus even though it’s 45+ hours a week, it’s easy.

Honestly, A Day Job Is So Much Easier Than Entrepreneurship. Once you go through the experience of having to be a self starter, make your own schedule, doing your own taxes, hiring and training sub-contractors, bring in your own clients, and deal with them without having a manger to back you up, not having to do any of those things but getting paid to get there at your scheduled time seems like your finessing the system. Yes I’m busy the whole time I’m there because I hate sitting idle and being non-productive. But time flies by and I hardly feel I’ve done anything with my day. I go home and immediately start working on answering emails and setting up meeting. As Simon from SOS says, sometimes you have to do what you don’t want to do, so you can get where you want to be.

Hope this was a good read, look out for the day 3 recap tomorrow!

30 Days to Something Day 1 recap!

This is a update for the first day.

Language

The 10 phrases we’re relatively easy wit the exception of one that kept giving me problems (beware the leeches). By mind cannot stop trying to convince me that it’s a trick though I must agree it’s not going to be this easy once I get into the 100+ phrases category. Or get done that quickly. I’ve also thought of using audacity to record me or someone else saying the phrases since I am trying to focus mostly on spoken communication.

Fitness

I worked out pretty hard yesterday as I worked Planche and back lever. I did tucked planche holds, planche leans, skin the cats, and assisted back lever holds. I actually found that the bar that I use have a part close enough and at the right height to place my feet so I can focus on the tension for the back lever.

I also did this exercise that was like a reverse row, where I look away from the suspension stray and use straight arms to pull myself back up. It was torture on the lower bicep and forearms but it felt effective.

Entrepreneurship

My LinkedIn in still in a state of disarray but I have outlined my plan for what to do with it. I have to take a professional photo, preferable during the golden hour, And reword my description and title. It’s going to be a major overhaul but it will be worth it.

Also I have moved forward very rapidly with a startup that I wanted to do sales with. I already have the independent contractor form to sigh, and I’ve already started networking with people in the industry and gaining product knowledge. It looks like a great venture and I can’t wait to get up and running with the new service. Hopefully the microstartups I’ve been talking to will get done soon also, as they’re products have a more accessible customer base and quicker sales turn around time. A week or less compared to several weeks-months. As a independent it’s good to diversify and be able to represent different services, as long as they don’t get in the way of each other. Plus with the smaller startups, if i can build a network I can then pass the referrals to a sales subcontractor I hire and split the commission with them. Thus giving me passive income. And who doesn’t love that 😀

Hope you enjoyed the read, stay tuned for the day 2 recap!

30 Day To Something, Goals And Resources

Alright, this is going to be a pretty cut and dry post. I’m going to outline my goals in-depth and provide you with resources in case you want to join in on the challenge.

Language

As I’ve said in the last post, I plan on learning 10 phrases a day for the next 30 days starting Sep 1st. This is because I feel I haven’t made the progress i wanted because I didn’t have the push to. But this month is the month that I really kickstart my learning process. I’m not sure if this goal is sustainable in the long-term, but I believe that it works perfectly for a 30 day challenge.

As a study guide I’ll be using the Lonely Planet phrasebook. I picked this book because it was very detailed and in-depth. A phrasebook is a better choice than regular learning methods to kickstart language learning because the focus in a phrasebook is communication. They are made for tourist who don’t have the time to learn everything grammatical in a language or learn it word by word. The focus is on quickly learning complete phrases in order to assimilate as quickly as possible.

I’ll also be using Anki desktop to create flashcards for the Turkish, mobile to study. And I’ll take every opportunity to study. Walking to the store, breaks at work, elevator time, etc. Any time that I’m not doing anything else that requires my full focus I will be studying. And all those little moments will add up very quickly, and by spacing out the learning process instead of cramming into one session is that it gives your brain time to process small pieces before you work on a new section.

And, to really put in the language learning process I will be watching Turkish historical dramas. I really love dramas and soap opera shows in other languages. I think this is due to me watching Spanish soaps when nothing else was on TV when I was younger. The shows I will choose between are Magnificent century, which I have watched the first episode of and love, and Dirillis Ertugrul which I have never seen but it looks very interesting!

Watching shows in a new language is a great way for your mind to pick up on accents, but more importantly the way words are strung together and how words are stressed.

Fitness

I’m working towards the planche, L-sit, back lever, and front lever. Am I going to get those in 30 days? Nope, not even close probably. But it is possible to get very simplified versions of them such as tucked planche, and tucked levers. And if I’m lucky I might even pull off one muscle up.

I also plan to work on my 800m time even though I haven’t found a track yet. But training for that will be pretty straight forwards. Mon: 16×50, Tues: 8×100, Wed: 4×200, Thur:2×400, Fri: 1×800 or something similar. This keeps workout times low and helps me build strength in every aspect of the 800m run.

I plan on working out 6 day on/1 day off. I’m going to work planche and L-sit together one day, and the levers the other day. Or I might do planche/front lever, L-sit/Back lever. It depends on how my grip strength is looking because you wouldn’t want to try to work bar exercises back to back if you don’t have the grip strength to really work it.

To simplify my training philosophy, as from Red Delta Training puts it, it’s all about tension. On some exercises I might hold a challenging position for one minute holds for sets of 3-5, then do reps of 8-12 of supporting exercises to really put work into the muscle and promote hypertrophy and strength gains.

On top of that I plan on working my acrobatic goals, the Arabian flip and the cart full, as well as my stretching goals, fingers to toes/side split, every other day.

A good post on Reddit about using Bodyweight fitness for hypertrophy training is https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/comments/323loz/my_hypertrophyoriented_version_of_the_recommended/ .

To track my calories and macros I’ll be using myfitnesspal, which is a great app for anyone who is trying to stay on top of their diet no matter if you’re trying to gain or lose weight.

The diet that I follow is the high in the fat and protein department, but moderate in carbs. This allows me to have a very flexible diet, but also eat less because honestly, i don’t like eating all that much anyway. So the less food i have to eat while still able to meet my goals the better. I aim to  consume 2900 a day, Carbs 25% or 181g, Protein 30% or 218g, and Fat 45% or 145g. My diet is mostly meat, veggies, peanut butter, beans, rice, and cheese. So far it has worked out very well for me. I don’t spent a lot of time at the table and I always feel full and focused.

Here are a few Youtubers I follow for diet, fitness, and motivation.

Business

Business is going to be pretty straight forwards. I’m going to split my time between building my client list through Craigslist, Talking to startups, and networking through my LinkedIn and in person.

I’m going to post and manage 3 post advertising my service, clean up and make my LinkedIn profile more professional in the first week. Build my contact list through local professionals. And trade time with them for free Starbucks by setting aside money for coffee meetups, a great idea by a Redditor where you invite out people you want to network with where you ask them for a conversation, in exchange you’ll buy them a coffee. Speaking of Reddit, two great resources you have to use if you aren’t already, r/entrepreneur and r/sales

The goal is to have 1-2 coffee meets setup every week, bring in and start working with a new client every week, and to finalize my role in a few startup companies I’d like to back with my sales skill. My moderate term goal for this is to be bringing in $2,000 a week by this time next year. My goal for this challenge is to have more connections in this new town that will help jump-start my success.

On a side note, I’m not sure what people are always going on about when they say they work full-time and don’t have time to make their dreams happen. I work 45 hours a week and I have tons of time. Just look at the math.

There are 168 hrs in a week, Take off 56 for 8 hrs of sleep a night and you have 112 left. Take another 45 off for work and you have 67. Divide that by 7 and you have 9.5 hours a day to work towards your goals. That’s a whole other shift you can put towards bettering yourself. And even if you only had 45 minutes to an hour to work on them, do it then. It’s better to get there slowly than not at all.

Hope this post helped a few people. I look forwards to getting this started off right!

September Goal Month: 30 days to something

September is a great month to set goals as it has an even 30 days in it, and many goal programs work on what you can accomplish in 30 days.

Also it’s the month of my birthday so I already knew it was a great month.

This September I’m going to work towards my goals in languages, fitness, and business. Goals that I put off from earlier in the year because of my own lack of discipline. It takes time to make new things a habit, and working towards my goals everyday will be a great way to kickstart that process.

In this post I’m going to quickly go over what my goals are, while my next post will go more in depth and explain the processes that I will be using to accomplish them. It will also include resources to links that I’ll be using or taking inspiration from.

30 Days to Something Goals

Language

Turkish is the language that I have been working on and off with. But I haven’t made much progress because of a lack of discipline. But it is a beautiful language, and once I get the digital nomad life up and running I would love to work out of Antalya. But before I go I want to be able to communicate effectively with Turkish people in their native language. One thing I’ve noticed from my studies is that I’m very bad at learning individual words even with Anki, but I learn phrases with relative ease, and I love grammar work more than learning words. Luckily for me, I learn words when I learn new phrases, and I get to pick up on grammar.

The plan is to learn 10 1-sentence phrases a day, everyday. At the end of 30 days that’s a grand total of 300 phrases, and many more words. And even if I won’t know the separate definitions of all the words in the phrases, I will be able to communicate.

Fitness

I don’t focus on weight as much. The reason I wanted to gain lean muscle weight in the first place, was to be ready for 7’s season. But I moved to a place that didn’t have a 7’s team, so I lost the discipline for that also. Even though I do still want to gain weight, it’s not my main goal anymore. Now I workout to achieve movements like the Planche, Front lever, Back lever, and Muscle up. When I train for a movement I feel more motivated because I can clearly see myself doing the moves in my mind. I can’t see myself at 165, nor can I imagine how that would change me. It’s a whole year until 7’s season so I have plenty of time to gain weight, now is the time to work on strength, speed, and coordination.

I’ll also be working on my 800m time if I can find a track, as well as my tricking goals, the raiz and back tuck/arabian.

Entrepreneurship

I did what was the unthinkable for myself, and I got a job. A regular run of the mill job. When I moved to the new city I moved to a place with no clients. At the same time my phone broke so I was left without. Now that I have a new phone and laptop I have the means of acquiring new clients. But that’s a process that takes time. So I got a job so that I could have money coming in, which I will then reinvest into networking and building my client list. Since I already have my food and apartment taken care of, using most of this money on networking isn’t going to be a problem.

To start off I’m going to remake my long neglected Linkedin. For those of you who aren’t fully utilizing this service, you are doing yourself a disservice to yourself. It’s a great way of networking and getting to know new people in your area who could potentially use your services. After I get that squared away, I’m going to go on Craigslist and find a service worth peddling, and a provider who I can get a good commission off of. It’s good to have multiple services and products to sell, because you never know who you might run into and what service they might need. The ones I’m looking at are..

  1. Small Business Customer Acquisition – I’ve had a lot of success with this one. The basic Idea is you provide a complete package. Website design, graphic design, promotional printing, email campaigns, etc. You’re the one stop shop for these small businesses, your services is getting them customers the most efficient way possible, and getting as many as they need.
  2. Residential/Commercial Power Washing – I haven’t done this one but looking at the numbers this could be a great way to make a nice commission. Power washing services tend to specialize in one or two type of services such as house/driveway cleaning, cars, restaurant stove hoods, commercial residential area/apartments. No matter which specialization you choose to represent there are going to be a high amount of customers. B2B will offer higher payouts but more work, while B2C will have lower payouts but will be slightly easier and there are millions of people and houses in my area.

There may be other opportunities that come along. A company has recently come to me to be a salesman for them, but it may take more than a month to get everything in place for me to start. A friend of mine also has a bit of a startup going for them. I’m not sure when they will be finished but I love their product and I would love to help them sell it no matter what the commission is.

That is the short of my goals for September 30 days of something. I’ll detail more tomorrow. I’ll post to remark on my goals everyday of the month with a recap on the first of October. And if you read this before the 1st of September, I hope you’ll join me in making some goals and seeing how far we can go together.
